Urban Kids Gardening Programs
The Spring 2013 Sustainable Springfield Growing Kids Veg-U-cation Program will focus around sustainable local food production/ gardening (practices that are viable over long periods of time, both environmentally and economically) urban ecology and ecological awareness.
Upon successful completion of the program, each student will receive a $200 stipend at the end of April.
The program will be offered nine consecutive Saturdays beginning March 2 - April 27, 2013. Each class will be 1.5 hours long (10:30am-12pm).
Only serious students who have the willingness to learn about urban vegetable gardening will be considered. We welcome students entering sixth grade-senior high school, ages 13-17. To qualify, the youth must:
The experience you gain in this program may lead you towards an internship/apprenticeship and future employment. It is expected that each student attend all nine classes. - have transportation to the kids garden site and be available to tend the garden plot on a regular basis( meaning you must be available to weed and water your garden bed at least 4 times a week.
- Submit the application below and a 150 word essay about why you wish to enroll in this program and how you will benefit from the experience.
- Please note: Preference will be given to students enrolled in a public school in the urban core, (Springfield, Eastside )

Farm Internship Program
Sustainable Springfield and Down to Earth Farm are partnering to offer a limited number of internships to high school students. The students will also receive a $1000 stipend upon successful completion of the internship. Each student must complete 100 hours of work with Down to Earth Farm in a 10 week period. The focus will be not only on growing food, but also on the commercial aspect as well. Students will learn business and work related skills that they can use as work experience for future employment. Each youth will be responsible for working with Down to Earth Farm on a schedule that accommodates their school time and Down to Earth's work time.
